Portage Township Schools in northwest Indiana were placed on lockdown on Wednesday after an unidentified caller claimed to be outside Portage High School with guns and said they intended to carry out a shooting. Police said the situation is still under investigation.
The Porter County Central Communications Center received the call around 11:10 a.m., according to police. The caller said they had a rifle and a handgun. While officers were on their way, the caller said they would try to enter the building and then hung up. Portage Township Schools were put on lockdown right away, and officers went to the high school to clear the building and check for any threat.
Police from surrounding agencies helped by stepping up patrols and checks at other schools in the district. Police have not identified the caller. They said there is currently no evidence the threat is credible, but the investigation is active and officers are following all available leads to find the person who made the call. At the time of the report, the schools were still on lockdown.
The information came from the Portage Police Department, as reported by FOX 32 Chicago. This is a developing story, and details may change as police learn more.
